Helpful Homeowner Tips
Tips for Avoiding Mosquitoes
Our Crews are very mindful in emptying pots, saucers or buckets with standing water on your property in an effort to prevent breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Below you will find some helpful tips that you can use to assist in avoiding mosquitoes.
- Repair leaky pipes and outside faucets.
- Empty water from boats.
- Change water and scrub vases holding flowers or cuttings twice each week.
- Pet dishes and birdbaths need to be checked and refilled at minimum of every 5 days.
- Get rid of old tires, tin cans, bottles and other containers.
- Clean clogged roof gutters and drain flat roofs.
- Stock fish pools or lily ponds with minnows. These fish devour mosquito larvae.
- Wear protective clothing, long pants, long-sleeve shirts, shoes and socks during times and in locations of high mosquito incidence. Be aware mosquitoes can bite right through T-shirts and other lightweight, tight-fitting clothing.
- Use insect repellant before going into high-risk areas or when outside during high-risk times.
- When in high-risk locations or during high-risk times, do not wear perfumed soaps, sprays or other sweet smelling formulas that might attract mosquitoes.
- Keep window screens and screened rooms in good repairs.
- Screen doors should open outward and have automatic closing devices and latches to prevent them from being accidentally left ajar.
- Extra care should be taken with children under age 5, adults over age 55 and those with weakened immune systems due to chronic illness. These populations are at greater risk from mosquito-borne diseases.
We have SAVED 331,000 gallons of water, or 26% of our previous year's usage to date. That represents a savings of $1,125. Irrigation repairs during this period cost us $555, so our savings represents a return on investment of 203% in this year alone. I would like to thank everyone at Serpico Landscaping for their continuing attention to this important area. They have accomplished this savings by changing spray patterns and altering water periods as well as repairing the system. And the place looks....Green!
